St George’s Church in Stockport is a Grade I listed church. A disused sound sphere was hanging from the timber roof, around 20 metres above the floor, and needed to come down without damaging the historic building.
Our IRATA rope access team planned and carried out the removal with no scaffolding and no disruption to church services. Find out more about our listed building repairs and heritage maintenance.

We used a throw line technique, more often used in tree surgery. A weighted bag and line were launched over the timber roof beams, around 20 metres above the floor. The line was then used to pull up our working ropes, which were secured and set up with a counterweight system.
This gave us safe and precise access to the sound sphere without touching the historic fabric of the building or interfering with church activities.
The sound sphere was removed safely without disrupting the church’s normal activities, and with no damage to the historic structure. See more of our rope access case studies.
