Unite Students needed two large signs installed high on the side of their building. Each sign had different access challenges, so we used the safest and most efficient method for each one.
We fitted one sign from a MEWP. The second could not be reached by a MEWP, so our IRATA rope access technicians installed it, with a crane lifting the sign into position. The job was completed safely, on time and within budget.
The project presented several challenges, including:
Height and access: Both signs were at significant height, and one could not be reached by a MEWP.
Size and weight: The signs were too large to carry by hand, so lifting had to be planned around the access method.
Tight deadline: The work had to be finished quickly with minimal disruption to students.
Our Solution
We planned a different access method for each sign:
Sign one, MEWP: Where a MEWP could reach, it gave our team a stable platform to fix the sign.
Sign two, rope access with a crane: Where a MEWP could not reach, a crane lifted the sign into place while our IRATA-certified rope access technicians positioned and fixed it.
One team, one plan: Our team planned the lifts, the access and the RAMS for both signs.
